Often I get caught up in always improving my technical skills. It’s easy to justify why, and it often feels like the one thing that matters most to improve.
However — one thing I believe deserves more attention is communication skills. No matter what your profession, role, position, and organization you are going to be communicating constantly. In addition, the way people perceive you, how successful you are in presenting ideas, and your ability to work together on a team is highly dependent on your communication skills.
One of the more inspiring talks I’ve seen on the topic is a TED Talk. An interesting question that is teased at the end is: What if our communication skills were perfect? What if nobody misunderstood you, you never misunderstood others, and thoughts were communicated perfectly?
It’s certainly an exciting an idea, and why I’ll always be working on communicating better.
